Budgets go on social media

US marketers spent $800 million on social networking, word-of-mouth and conversational marketing last year, up more than 23% on 2008’s total, with spending expected to run to over $1 billion (an increase of 35%) in 2010, according to figures provided by eMarketer from Jack Myers Media Business Report.

That growth is substantially higher than predictions for paid social network advertising. eMarketer estimates that marketers spent $1.2 billion on paid social network advertising such as banners, text ads and search ads in the US in 2009, rising 7.1% to $1.3 billion in 2010.
